Chapter Thirteen

The Crypts
I look around the vast, empty chamber, thinking back to all the plans Beatrice and I had made in here.
Of course, back then, all this was furnished. Back then, I was willfully blind to the faults of her heart.
She had seduced me with tales of grandeur. More than I ever dreamed possible. It made me grow soft on her. It made me turn a blind eye to the true depravity of her soul.
But when it all finally clicked, when I went down and saw the creatures she was makingâthat was the final straw. She was not transcending vampirism, as sheâd always claimed. She perverting our kind into something else.
And so I banished her. I gave her a chance to escape unharmed. I let her think it was all her doing, but in truth, no vampire of my coven can leave The Crypts without my being aware of it.
That is what very few understand. Not even Elnor knows the depth of my connection to these walls. I built this coven from the ground up, and it is just as much a part of me as my left hand.
I look at my hand. I feel it. I make a fist and let go.
After Cierraâs soul transfusion, after she helped me heal, I am stronger than ever.
I open the raging void in my mind and feel the dirty, vile, menacing Blood Magic course through me. Such poisonâbut it makes me feel so alive!
I cut off the flow ruthlessly. I know if there were anybody in the room, they would see the torrent of miasma in my eyes.
I care not. Right now, I feel more ready to tackle whatever comes my way than I ever have before. It must be the combination of what Cierra did to me, coupled with my excitement for the next stage of my lifeâs work to begin.
I start pacing the floor impatiently. I said we would attack on the next full moon. That is only two days away now. I thought it symbolic.
But now, I find myself asking: Why? Why wait any longer? The Ancient is ready, Cierra is ready. My coven is fed.
Most of all, I feel invincible right now.
My thoughts turn to Dagan. I gave him the deadline to come back. He is my commander. But do I really need him? With the demons, with my new strength, with everything that has happened, why should I not lead the charge?
And why should we not do it right now?
I call for Cierra. My voice echoes through the chamber.
I wait. The witch could be anywhere right now.
Yet, instinct tells me sheâs close by.
As expected, she knocks on the far away entrance door within minutes. I channel Blood Magic to fling it open.
âCome,â I tell her, baring my fangs in a rictus smile.
She advances toward me slowly. There might be a bit of hesitation in her walk.
I know itâs nothing more than theater.
âYes, my King?â she asks. âIt seems you took to the resurrection well.â
âToo well, perhaps,â I tell her.
